Major Update to Brawlers


I've been working on Brawlers World Championship Fighting for about 7 months and it's beginning to get pretty complex. Like with any game project, to finish is the goal. I've been working hard to reach that goal, while providing updates every two months, in the form of these devlogs and inline with the  Improve My Game Jam. Brawlers was intended to be a simple beat'em up fighting game. However it has grown to be more complicated than that. It's still a beat'em fighting game but now the focus has shifted to multiplayer and being able to customize your character's attacks, movement and stances. 

For this update,  I aimed to deliver on the following.

  • Export to mobile
    • Have a working mobile version of the game.
  • Art and Effects
    • Add particle effects that are needed and review all existing. 
  • AI
    • Develop a competent A.I. Character to fight against 
  • Multiplayer
    • Have the multiplayer system working to the point where i can have matches with real world opponents online.
  • Improve Combat System.
    • Introduce New mechanics in the game such as a Grappling Mechanic and fix existing  mechanics such as the Block Mechanic.
  • Sound Effects
    • Improve the Sound Effects samples and add new ones.
  • Music
    • Add at least one music track to the game
  • Life for player and AI
    • Implement the life for A.I. Characters and also the Life System for the player characters.

Now I haven't delivered on all the items in this list but these are the items i actually worked on.

Update Log

  • Export to Mobile
    • The export was successful and it plays great on mobile, however i ran into a major bug which caused me to re-think the visual style of the game. This forced me to now put the Art direction of the game on hold for now.
  • Improve Combat System
    • Fixed the Block Mechanic has been implemented and is working as expected however, it may need further testing.
    • I have added a Stance Mechanic which allows the user to change his/her stance. In theory, this should affect what moves you can use and also your movement options. A U.I. allow for the Stances to be changed is still to be implemented.
    • The system now recognizes when a character is hit by a special move. This allows for the hit character to be able to react differently when hit by certain special moves. 
    • Normal Move Menu Systems
      • Now determining the layout
  • Art and Effects
    • Due to the difficulties i encounter when exporting to mobile, I removed one of the post processing materials. This forced me to now put the Art direction of the game on hold for now.
  • Music
    • Title Track ( Its Possible )
    • I honestly have not paid much attention to music for this project.
  • Special Move Menu System Update.
    • I've implemented Visual previews in the  special moves menu for the player to preview a move before he equips it.
    • I've also updated the player HUD to show that the screen is split and also made the turn direction buttons bigger.
  • Main Mechanics
    • After playing around for a while i discovered a tech that allow you to get longer combos. I have to see this in action to see if it will be and unfair technical advantage for advance players.  For now it's just a fun new thing players may find out themselves.

I eventually ran into some technical and financial issues as my machine had stopped functioning and after a few months trying to get it repaired, we were unable to get it back up and running. This resulted in a four month delay. I only started to review the game again in December,  aiming to get a new machine that can handle the development. I'm currently still trying to get over this hurdle resulting on me not being able to release the new update. 

I hope i can find a way over this soon.
